On the afternoon of July 2nd — two days before Independence Day — Westwind Brass performs a free two-hour concert for veterans and patients at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, one of the largest VA medical campuses in the United States. This afternoon performance features American standards, patriotic favorites, and the full richness of a professional brass quintet — performed live at the place where San Diego’s veterans receive their care. San Diego is home to more than 240,000 veterans. Many of them are patients at this facility. Many carry invisible wounds — PTSD, traumatic brain injury, the compounding effects of long service. Clinical research demonstrates that live music meaningfully supports recovery across all of these: reducing physiological stress responses, improving mood, and building the human connection essential to healing. Westwind Brass believes in music as care — and on July 2, that belief is in action.
